If you have text that is already formatted into rows and columns using tabs, commas, or any other consistent character, you can easily convert it to a table in Word 2013 with just a few clicks.

Existing text must be delimited with a consistent character to separate columns for conversion to succeed. (By "delimited," we mean "separated" using a regular pattern. ) The most common methods of delimiting data are tab stops and commas.

This figure's text, for instance, displays a subset of the data from the preceding exercise formatted as a delimited text file in Notepad (a text editor), with three columns and commas indicating where each column should break.

1. If you want to work on a document, open it up or make a new one.

   \n
\n

2. Choose Insert > Table > Convert Text to Table after selecting all of the text in the document.

   \n

   To select every word in the document, just press Ctrl A.

   \n

   As can be seen in the illustration, the Convert Text to Table dialogue box appears.

3. Click OK

   \n

   A five-column table will appear from the text.

4. Put the updated file away for safekeeping.

   \n

   Converting text to a table may fail if the rows do not contain an equal number of delimiters, which can cause unexpected results. Perhaps a tab is missing from your browser, or perhaps you have two tabs side by side.

   \n

   If you made a mistake when marking your columns, press Ctrl + Z to undo the table creation and start over. To make the tabs more visible, you can toggle the display of hidden characters by clicking the Show/Hide () button in the Home tab.

   Converting text to a table may not work as expected if not all rows contain the same number of delimiters. It's possible that one of your tabs is missing, or that you have two tabs side by side.

   You can delete the table by pressing Ctrl Z, then move the column headers around and create the table again. To make the tabs more visible, you can toggle the display of hidden characters by clicking the Show/Hide () button in the Home tab.
