Convert JPG to PDF
JPG is a format designed for compact storage of graphic files. Due to the optimal ratio of image quality and file size, JPEG has become the most used format both on the Internet and on various photo devices. And support for files with the .jpg extension is present in almost all programs working with graphics. JPG format files are distinguished by the possibility of so-called compression - reducing the file size by simplifying it. The compression ratio can be customized to the needs of the user.

However, in some cases, JPG is not the best choice for storing information. For example, if you have an image that contains text, perhaps the best choice would be to convert it into one of the PDF formats.

The PDF (Portable Document Format) format is designed for the convenient presentation of documents. It was created by Adobe Systems using the programming language PostScripts. Initially, pdf was supported only by official software, and even the program for viewing it — Adobe Acrobat Reader — was paid. However, later Adobe changed its policy and released the free version, and the format itself made open, allowing third-party companies and developers to use it in their programs.

Since then, the popularity of PDF has greatly increased, and the format itself has become practically the standard for the exchange of documentation and layouts for printing. Files with the .pdf extension can contain text information, fonts, images, and even video and animation. Editing and saving in PDF format are supported by many programs for working with documents.

Convert PDF to JPG
PDF (short for Portable Document Format) was created as a format that is a digital equivalent of documents. In this format, all elements of the document are saved as an image, which is composed of individual elements (text, graphics) and their settings (fonts, layout, etc.). With PDF, you can do everything you need as with a regular document — view, edit, print, send to other people. To view PDF files, there are many programs. The most popular of them is the official program from the company-developer of the format - Adobe Reader (or the paid version of Adobe Acrobat). There are also various plug-ins for Internet browsers, as well as mini-programs for viewing embedded in the web pages.

Files with the .pdf extension can consist of several pages combined into one document, which is very convenient. But if you need to convert the document pages into separate images, it is more convenient to use the JPG format, instead of PDF.

A JPEG file is a bitmap (raster) image format that can be opened in almost any photo viewing application. This is the most common graphic format on the Internet. Thanks to compression technology, JPG files can take up much less space than other common graphic files. At the same time, the image quality is maintained at a fairly good level. However, it is worth remembering that with repeated or too intensive compression, defects may appear in the image.

The need to convert PDF to JPG may arise when the user needs to receive images of each page separately as a graphic file. As a result of this conversion, you will receive each page of the document as an image with the .jpg extension.

When you take a photo on most smartphones, it almost always saves the image as a JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), or .jpg file format.

The reason is to do with storage because JPG files are compressed to reduce the file size.

These are handy for digital viewing or photo sharing online.

The PDF is a universal file format supported by all browsers. It comes in super handy for printing images. In particular, multiple images. Like printing your own photo book.

From here, you can select as many images as you want to convert them all into a single PDF file.

Step 1: Hover the cursor over the image and a check box appears in the top right.

Step 2: Check the box to select each image you want to be included in the PDF file

Method 3: Use Canva to convert a JPG to a PDF file

Despite Canva being primarily an online graphic design tool, it is capable of converting file types.

You will need a free account to use the tools. Go to Canva.com and either sign in or sign up for a free account.

Step 1: Click on “Create a design”

Step 2: Select a size such as an A4 document or use custom dimensions

Step 8: On the file type drop-down menu, select either “PDF Standard” or PDF Print”.

The difference between PDF Standard and PDF Print is the output quality.

  • Canva PDF Standard is 96 dpi (dots per inch),

PDF standard is useful when the intention is for the file to be viewed digitally.

  • Canva PDF Print is 300 dpi with the option for applying a print bleed.

PDF Print is for high-resolution pictures in Canva

If you do not intend to print the PDF, use the Standard PDF download.

Method 4: Use Google Drive

Google Drive is handy for managing a range of documents and file types on smartphones.

You can send any or all JPG files stored in your devices Media Gallery to Google Drive.

Step 1: Open your media gallery,

5e6add9863d97.jpg?a=66667-6c3333&s=334543-be9a07

Step 2: Select the image (or images) you want to send to Drive

Step 3: Tap the share icon (in the middle at the bottom of the screen)

Step 4: Tap on “My Drive”.

Step 5: (Desktop) Once the image is uploaded to Drive, tap on the “print” icon on the top right of the screen then select the option to “Save as PDF”.

On smartphones: Tap the three vertical dots to the top right, scroll down the list of options, and select “print”.

Step 6: On the top left, select the “Save as PDF” option.

Step 7: Tap on the orange button that has the download icon with PDF beneath it.

Step 8: Select the location to save the PDF to, then tap “save”.

The PDF will now be stored as a document on your device instead of in the images folder.

If you need to make edits to the document, note the location as it will be needed to convert PDF to Word (or any other editable format), to edit the document, then save it as a PDF again.

Method 5: Use an Online JPG to PDF converter

Many tools are available for multiple file-type conversions. Adobe created the PDF extension and they offer a free JPG to PDF tool.

Go to the official Adobe.com website, select the “PDF & E-signatures” tab in the website navigation menu, then select “online tools”. Select the Convert to PDF Option.

Step 1: Click the select a file button

5e6add9863d97.jpg?a=66667-6c3333&s=334543-be9a07

Step 2: Select the JPG to be converted to PDF

Step 3: Click open and the tool will start the file conversion process. (it only takes seconds)

The Adobe JPG to PDF is beneficial for scanned documents that have been saved in JPG format as it uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

Drive and Word both have text extraction technology, but the results after the file are converted can be different from the original.

The good news is that if one method does not produce the intended result, you can move on to another.

For text-heavy images, such as scanned forms and letters, the formatting and quality of text extraction differ based on the efficiency of OCR technology.

The above five methods all work to convert JPG to PDF.

Hi, I have a folder with a bunch of images in it. Some images have a particular string in the filename, like "mhk". I need to grab only those images from that folder and put them into a PDF file, with each image having its own page. I tried different things but I can't even get past just combining them into a single image, let alone into a PDF. Here is what I have:

Code: Select all

magick montage `dir /b | findstr mhk` -mode concatenate -tile 1x out.png
Somebody please help. Thanks,

Ramin

You say you want the PDF "with each image having its own page". Then you say "I can't even get past just combining them into a single image".

Which of these do you want? A PDF with a single page, with a single image that is a combination of all the input images? Then:

Code: Select all

magick montage *mhk* -mode concatenate -tile 1x out.pdf
Or do you want a PDF with as many pages as there are input images, one image per page? Then:

Code: Select all

magick *mhk* out.pdf

snibgo, I have a second question for you, if I may. How about this scenario: I have several banners: Page1.png, Page2.png, ... Page10.png, and I have lots of images but they are in groups. Each group is identified with a special alphanumeric code, like "mhk" so, it looks like this: image1mhk.png image2mhk.png ... image10mhk.png image11xyz.png image12xyz.png ... image20xyz.png ... And the group number varies. The group list can be in a text file like so: mhk xyz ... I need to montage the banner with the image and then put it into its own PDF page. So, it will look like this. =====Page 1 of PDF===== Page1.png image1mhk.png =====Page 2 of PDF===== Page2.png image2mhk.png ... =====Page 11 of PDF===== Page1.png image11.xyz.png =====Page 12 of PDF===== Page2.png image12xyz.png ... I would greatly appreciate your help.

Sorry, I am new to ImageMagick and I love it but I don't know much about it and I need to know a lot about it 404 image

What's the problem? From your OP, you know how to montage two files together, to make a third. You can do that many times (or in a shell loop) to montage each Page*.png file with a image*xyz.png file.

Then you can take each result, making a PDF with one page per result, as I showed you:

Code: Select all

magick result*.png out.pdf
I suggest you use leading zeroes in your numbering scheme, so they come out in the order you expect, eg result001.png, result002.png, ... result010.png.

Thank you, snibgo! I will work with that. Can you also tell me what this command means:

Code: Select all

%IM%convert
I was looking at your page (http://im.snibgo.com/spdsiz.htm) and I am confused about the percent sign before and after "IM". When I try using it on my Windows Server it doesn't recognize it. When I am trying to use the "convert" command, it is a Windows command and not a part of the IM. Where can I read more about this stuff?

Thank you so much for helping me! I truly appreciate it.

I use an environment variable called IM, which is set to a directory that contains a v6 ImageMagick.

Code: Select all

f:\web\im>echo %IM%
c:\im\ImageMagick-6.9.5-3-Q16\
So my scripts use "%IM%convert" to run that particular version of IM. I have about 50 versions installed.

Another method is to tell IM at installation that you want it to add IM's directory to the front of your system path. Then you can just use "convert" and this will run IM's program, not the Microsoft program.

How to merge multiple jpg files to pdf on Mac

How to combine JPG into one PDF on a Mac. The good news is if you want to merge multiple JPG files into a single PDF, you can do it all with tools that come standard with macOS. In fact, you’ll only need to use the Preview app. For those that aren’t familiar with Preview, it’s the app that lets you look at pictures and PDFs without adding them to your photo library. Now that we know what ...

Duplicate pictures can cause a huge headache, especially if you’re trying to keep your photo library organized.

Gemini 2

But here’s a tip: download Gemini 2 to help you quickly scan for duplicates and get rid of them. With Gemini 2, you can choose which folders to scan or select your entire hard drive.

If you have a handful of physical pictures or documents you want to digitize, a scanner is going to be your best friend. But the annoying thing about them, especially personal home scanners, is that they’ll typically save each photo or page of your document as a different JPG file. So, while you might have a seven-page contract you want to scan – that might leave you with seven different files on your computer. It can be cumbersome, to say the least. Especially if you’re trying to share those documents as easily as possible.

Fortunately, it’s relatively simple to combine images into a PDF on your Mac. Keep reading. This article will explain how to do just that and what you should look out for if you’ve got a handful of documents to scan.

How to combine JPG into one PDF on a Mac

The good news is if you want to merge multiple JPG files into a single PDF, you can do it all with tools that come standard with macOS. In fact, you’ll only need to use the Preview app. For those that aren’t familiar with Preview, it’s the app that lets you look at pictures and PDFs without adding them to your photo library.

Now that we know what Preview is used for, here’s how you convert multiple JPGs to a PDF on Mac:

  • Find a JPG file you want to combine and open it in Preview.

If the file doesn’t open in Preview, you can right-click or hold down Control click on the file and choose Open With > Preview.

Click File > Export as PDF.Then, find that new PDF you just made and double-click to open it.Open another JPG you want to merge with this PDF.Click View > Thumbnails in each of the windows.Drag and drop the JPG into the sidebar of the window with the PDF.

You can keep adding as many JPGs as you have until your PDF is complete. Just make sure to save the PDF before you close it. You can either press Command S on your keyboard or click File > Save.

Now, you’ve mostly been reading merging JPG files. But, if you have multiple PDF files you want to combine, you can do that as well. Just follow the instructions above, starting at Step 3.

After you combine JPGs to PDFs on Mac

When you’re done consolidating your image files into a single PDF, then you probably don’t need to keep those individual files anymore. They’re just taking up precious storage space on your Mac’s hard drive. But instead of just letting them sit there, you can use an app like Gemini 2 to help you scan for all those duplicate or similar files and help you quickly get rid of them.

After you download and install Gemini 2, just follow these steps:

  1. Open Gemini 2.
  2. Click > Home folder.
  3. Then, hit the Scan for Duplicates button.

Then, when the scan is finished, you’ll have a choice to either select Review Results or Smart Cleanup.

If you decide to click Review Results, then you’ll be able to see every file Gemini 2 found. When you click on a file, the preview pane will open on the right side of the window. That way, you can go preview all of the files to see how they differ and decide for yourself which files you want to delete and which ones you want to keep.

And on the other hand, the Smart Cleanup button does just what it sounds like it does. It will get rid of all of your duplicate and similar files in one click. Gemini 2 uses an algorithm to select the best version of each of your files and delete the rest. Seriously, that’s all you have to do. Gemini 2 does all of the heavy lifting if you want it to.

Converting and combining your JPGs into a solitary PDF is so much less daunting than it might sound like when you’re sitting down to do it for the first time. The Preview app makes it easy and convenient so that you don’t need to buy any additional software. You can just leverage the apps that come standard with macOS. And hopefully, after reading through this article, you’re feeling a little more confident merging your files into one PDF.

The JPG (JPEG) format is without any doubt the most popular format used to share images on the Internet. However, there are several advantages in using PDF images compared to JPG images. For one, while JPG is a raster format with lossy compression, PDF is a layout format that contains both vector and raster graphics.

This means that while the printing quality of JPG images depends on their pixel dimensions, PDF image files can print out exactly what you see on screen. Besides, the PDF format supports text search within PDF files using OCR, and can contain richer metadata than JPG format.

If you would like to convert JPG image file to PDF format on Linux, you can use ImageMagic or GhostScript, both of which are free Linux software.

Convert JPEG image file to PDF format using ImageMagick

First, install ImageMagick on your system.

For Debian/Ubuntu system:

$ sudo apt-get install imagemagick

For CentOS/RHEL/Fedora system:

$ sudo yum install imagemagick

Among the utilities contained in ImageMagick package, a utility called convert can convert from JPG to PDF. The convert command will scale input image such that it will fit either page width or page height. You can run convert command as follows.

$ convert input.jpg output.pdf

If you want to convert multiple JPG images to one PDF file with multiple pages:

$ convert input1.jpg input2.jpg input3.jpg output.pdf

Or:

$ convert *.jpg output.pdf

Then each JPG file will be converted into one page of the multi-page PDF file.

The convert utility also supports various transformations of input images before PDF conversion, as described in the following.

To specify the dimension of page (i.e., image canvas), you can use -page option of convert command. If page dimension is larger than input image size, the image will be placed in lower left corner of a page.

$ convert -page 1600x1200 input.jpg output.pdf

To specify the dimension of image:

$ convert -size 800x600 input.jpg output.pdf

To resize the image:

$ convert -resize 50% input.jpg output.pdf

Convert JPEG image file to PDF format using Ghostscript

First, install ghostscript on your system.

For Debian/Ubuntu system:

$ sudo apt-get install ghostscript

For CentOS/RHEL/Fedora system:

$ sudo yum install ghostscript

Then, run gs command to convert a JPG image to PDF format as follows.

$ gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -o output.pdf /usr/share/ghostscript/8.71/lib/viewjpeg.ps -c "(input.jpg) viewJPEG"

To convert multiple JPG images (e.g., input1.jpg, input2.jpg, input3.jpg) to one PDF file (with multiple pages):

$ gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -o output.pdf /usr/share/ghostscript/8.71/lib/viewjpeg.ps -c "(intput1.jpg)  viewJPEG showpage (input2.jpg)  viewJPEG showpage (intput3.jpg) viewJPEG showpage"

You have several documents or images scanned individually and you need to save multiple images to one PDF file.

You may find several websites that allow you to do that. But they are either not free or they will put their watermark on the final PDF file. And in any case, I don’t want to upload my documents to some random web server.

I had this need when I had to apply for a job and they required me to upload a single PDF file consisting of several documents. My problem was that I had documents scanned individually but not in one file.

It’s just one of the examples where you may need to convert multiple image files in one PDF file.

In Linux, there are several ways you can combine multiple images into a single PDF file.

  • LibreOffice Draw or even Writer can be used to combine multiple images into PDF
  • gscan2pdf graphical tool can also be used combining multiple images (and single page PDFs) into a single PDF one.
  • The versatile ImageMagic command line tool can be used for converting images into PDF.

I’ll show all the above three methods in this tutorial.

Method 1: Use LibreOffice to combine multiple images into PDF

Open the LibreOffice Draw tool. This is a very handy tool and you can even edit PDF files with it. It is already preinstalled in most distributions so I am not going to discuss the LibreOffice installation in Ubuntu.

The idea here is to add your images in the pages and when you have everything set as per your desire, export everything as PDF. Not only image files, you can also add single page PDF file and combine them together with images into a single PDF file.

combine images to pdf using libreoffice draw
Combine images to PDF using LibreOffice Draw

You can add new pages, insert images or PDF files (also inserted with insert image option) in those pages and then hit the PDF on the top. You’ll have a single PDF file with multiple images with all the images in it.

That was simple. Want even simpler? Use gscan2pdf which is explained in the next section.

Method 2: Use gscan2pdf GUI tool to convert multiple images to PDF

gscan2pdf is a utility that was created for scanning documents, quickly edit them and saving them in PDF. You don’t need a scanner to use it. Simply open it and add images to it.

gscan2pdf is a popular tool and it should be available in the repository of most Linux distributions. You can use your distribution’s package manager or software center to install it.

In Ubuntu, you can find it in the Software Center or use the apt command to install it.

Open a terminal using Ctrl Alt T shortcut and use the following command to install gscan2pdf:

sudo apt install gscan2pdf

Once installed, open gscan2pdf by searching for it in the menu

gscan2pdf ubuntu
Start gscan2pdf

Once gscan2pdf is opened, you can select all the required files in it by clicking on the Open Files.

By default,  it is arranged in alphabetical order but you can drag and drop to reorder the images as per your choice.

Once done, you can click on the Save icon to save the files to PDF.

combine images to pdf gscan2pdf
Add files, reorder if needed and click on save icon

When you hit the save button, the next screen might look confusing. Actually it provides you option of putting metadata in the document such as author, date etc similar to a word document.

If you just want a PDF file, hit the save button. Since the default output file is PDF, you don’t need to bother a lot here. Just choose where to save the converted file.

save files withgscan2pdf
Save the file as PDF

Since it is Linux, there is always a way to do the same thing in the terminal. Let me show the command line way of converting images into PDF in the next section.

Method 3: Using command line to convert multiple images to PDF

If you want to go the command line way, you can use ImageMagick. It’s very easy to convert several images into one PDF file this way as well.

Open a terminal and install ImageMagic using the command below:

sudo apt-get install imagemagick

Once you have it installed, use the ‘convert’ command line tool of ImageMagic. Just provide the paths to individual images and at the end of the command, name the output file. For example, something like this:

convert image1.jpg image2.png image3.bmp output.pdf

That’s it. Nothing more to be done. Cool isn’t it? :)

Did it work for you?

I hope this article helped you to merge multiple images into one PDF in Ubuntu Linux. If you are further interested, check this article to know how to edit PDF files in Ubuntu Linux.

Questions, suggestions, a word of thanks is always encouraged.
