## Volume unit

The volume is used in several situations in order to obtain the measured quantity of space occupied by a solid, or the amount of material (liquid, gas or solid) that it may contain. The solid used in the calculation of the volume is the cube because, as each of its facets is composed of square, the latter has a regular formula. The volume is therefore represented by the following global formula: side (length) multiplied by another side (width) and multiplied by another side (height). It is this same amount of side that leads to the representation of power or exponent 3 or 3.

1. 1

Determine that you are making the correct conversion. In this method, you should know how many cubic feet you have, and want to find out how many cubic yards that value is equal to. Make sure you are working with cubic units (volume), and not square units (area).

• For example, you might want to convert 600 cubic feet to cubic yards.
2. 2

Understand the relationship between cubic yards and cubic feet. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. This means for every cubic yard, you have 27 cubic feet. You can show this by the proportion 1yd327ft3{\displaystyle {\frac {1yd^}{27ft^}}} .

3. 3

Set up an equation. On the left side will be the unit proportion of cubic yards to cubic feet. On the right side will be a proportion representing the number yards you are trying to find. Create a fraction with an unknown number of yards in the numerator (x{\displaystyle x} ), and the number of feet you are converting in the denominator.

• For example, if you want to know how many cubic yards are in 600 cubic feet, your equation will look like this:1yd327ft3=x600ft3{\displaystyle {\frac {1yd^}{27ft^}}={\frac {x}{600ft^}}} .
4. 4

Isolate the variable. To do this, multiply each side of the equation by the number of cubic feet you are trying to convert. Multiply the number of cubic feet by the numerator of the unit proportion on the left side of the equation.

• For example:
1yd327ft3=x600ft3{\displaystyle {\frac {1yd^}{27ft^}}={\frac {x}{600ft^}}} 1yd327ft3×600=x600ft3×600{\displaystyle {\frac {1yd^}{27ft^}}\times 600={\frac {x}{600ft^}}\times 600} 600yd327ft3=x{\displaystyle {\frac {600yd^}{27ft^}}=x} 5. 5

Divide the number of cubic feet by 27. This will give you the equivalent number of cubic yards. Note that you can simplify this method by simply dividing the number of cubic feet you have by 27.

• For example:
600yd327ft3=x{\displaystyle {\frac {600yd^}{27ft^}}=x} 22.2yd3=x{\displaystyle 22.2yd^=x} So, 600 cubic feet is equal to 22.2 cubic yards.
1. 1

Ensure you are making the correct conversion. For this method you should begin with cubic feet and end up with cubic yards. This method does not work for the opposite conversion (cubic yards to cubic feet). Make sure you are using cubic units and not square units, as the conversion rate will be different.

2. 2

Calculate the conversion rate. For every 1 cubic yard, there are 27 cubic feet. This means that a cubic foot is 127{\displaystyle {\frac }} of a cubic yard. To find the conversion rate, you calculate 1÷27=.03703704{\displaystyle 1\div 27=.03703704} .

3. 3

Multiply the number of cubic feet by the conversion rate. This will give you the number of cubic yards that are equivalent to the given number of cubic feet. Since feet are smaller than yards, you will end up with fewer yards than feet after converting.

• For example, if you want to convert 600 cubic feet to cubic yards, calculate (600)(.03703704)=22.2{\displaystyle (600)(.03703704)=22.2} . So, 600 cubic feet is equivalent to 22.2 cubic yards.
1. 1

Make sure you are converting correctly. In this method you begin with cubic yards and end up with cubic feet. If you are working with square feet and square yards, this conversion method will not work.

2. 2

Understand the relationship between cubic yards and cubic feet. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. That means that the number of cubic feet will be 27 times more than the equivalent number of yards.

3. 3

Multiply the number of cubic yards by 27. This will give you the number of cubic feet equivalent to the given number of cubic yards. Since feet are smaller than yards, the number of feet will be greater than the number of yards.

• For example, if you wanted to convert 20 cubic yards to cubic feet, you would calculate (20)(27)=540{\displaystyle (20)(27)=540} . So 20 cubic yards is equivalent to 540 cubic feet.
• Question

How many yards of concrete in an area 8 feet x 5 feet x 5 inches deep? First multiply 8 by 5 by 5/12 = 16.67 cubic feet. Then divide by 27 (or multiply by 0.037) to find cubic yards.

• Question

How many yards in a cubic yard? There is no such thing as "yards in a cubic yard." A cubic yard may be visualized, however, as a cube with each edge measuring one yard in length (although that's not the only shape a cubic yard could take; it could take virtually any shape).

• Question

How many liquid gallons are in a cubic foot? There are 7.48052 gallons in a cubic foot. So to convert gallons to cubic feet, you would divide the number of gallons by 7.48052. To convert cubic feet to gallons, multiply the number of cubic feet by 7.48052.

• Question

For rate of flow in the shower, is .32 cubic feet per minute for 12 minutes greater or less than .4 cubic yards in the tub? (.32)(12) = 3.84 cubic feet from the shower. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, so .4 cubic yard is (.4)(27) = 10.8 cubic feet. So the amount of water from the shower is about one-third the amount of water in the tub.

For example, if you have one measurement that is 7'3" you can enter that as 7.25 feet (3"/12" = 0.25 ft). If you have a measurement of 245 cm you can also enter that as 2.45 m.

If you have an area in square feet you can still calculate cubic yards. In the calculator, select Rectangle. Enter your square feet in the Length field, and enter "1" in the Width field. Enter how deep you want the fill in the Depth field. Click "Calculate" and your answer will be shown in cubic yards.

## How to Calculate Cubic Yards using feet and inches

### Measure

• Measure your area in feet
• Determine the depth of your material, say mulch, that you will put on this area generally using depth in inches

### Convert all of your measurements to feet

• If you measured in feet only skip to "Calculate"
• If you measured in feet & inches, divide inches by 12 and add that to your feet measure to get total feet
• If you measured in inches only, divide inches by 12 and that is your measurement in feet

### Calculate Cubic Yards

• Calculate your area
• Calculate your volume: Multiply area times the depth to get volume in cubic feet
• Calculate your cubic yards: Divide cubic feet by 27 to convert to cubic yards and this is your answer
• Where ft2 = square foot, ft3 = cubic foot, yd3 = cubic yard

## Concrete

This general purpose concrete formulation, called also concrete-aggregate (4:1 - sand/gravel aggregate : cement - mixing ratio w/ water) conversion tool is based on the concrete mass density of 2400 kg/m3 - 150 lbs/ft3 after curing (rounded). Unit mass per cubic centimeter, concrete has density 2.41g/cm3. The main concrete calculator page.

The 4:1 strength concrete mixing formula applies the measuring portions in volume sense (e.g. 4 buckets of concrete aggregate, which consists of gravel and sand, with 1 bucket of cement.) In order not to end up with a too wet concrete, add water gradually as the mixing progresses. If mixing concrete manually by hand; mix dry matter portions first and only then add water. This concrete type is commonly reinforced with metal rebars or mesh.

Calculate how much mulch or other landscaping material you need. Select the shape of your mulch bed and input the dimensions in feet, inches, meters or centimeters.

The mulch calculator provides the answer in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters for the volume of mulch required to fill your space. Also calculate the cost of mulch or other material when you enter the price for bulk mulch by the cubic yard or cubic meter. If you're buying mulch by the bag, enter the price per bag and select how much mulch is in each bag.

## How to Calculate Mulch Volume

The method you use to calculate how much mulch you need depends on the shape of the area you want to cover with mulch. You can see the methods to calculate mulch in landscaping beds of different shapes below. For this example we'll calculate how much mulch you need for a landscaping bed with a rectangle shape.

Anytime you fill an area with material of a certain depth you want to calculate the volume of the material. First multiply the length and width dimensions of your space to get the area in square feet. Then multiply the area by the depth of the material in the same units (feet in this case) to get the volume in cubic feet. If you need to convert this to cubic yards, divide cubic feet by 27.

## Example: How Much Mulch Do I Need?

Say you have 5 ornamental landscaping beds around your house. They are rectangular in shape and about the same size, measuring 10' 6" long by 3' wide. You want to cover the beds to have a layer of mulch that is 3" deep. You'll need to calculate how much mulch you need for one bed, and then multiply that by 5 to cover each of your beds.

To calculate mulch for one bed multiply the length times the width, and then multiply that by the depth. Keep in mind that the units must be the same on each of these measurements. We'll use feet here, and a partial foot will be a decimal number.

• First convert 10 feet 6 inches into a decimal. 6 inches divided by 12 inches per foot is 0.5, so your bed is 10.5 feet long.
• Multiply length times width. 10.5 ft × 3 ft = 31.5 square feet
• Convert your depth of 3" into decimal feet. 3 inches divided by 12 inches per foot is 0.25.
• Multiply your square footage by your depth. 31.5 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 7.875 cubic feet.
• You need mulch for 5 beds, so 5 × 7.875 = 39.375 cubic feet.
• Divide by 27 to convert the mulch volume into cubic yards. 39.375 ÷ 27 = 1.458 cubic yards

The Mulch Calculator makes this calculation easy by doing all the conversions and the math for you. You can also input how much your mulch will cost by the unit, like per cubic yard or cubic meter, or by the bag. The calculator finds the cost of your quantity of mulch given the cost per unit.

If you are buying your mulch by the bag, input length, width and mulch depth and select the size of the bag you'll purchase. The mulch calculator will tell you how many bags you need and how much it will cost if you input price per bag.

Note: If you already have the square footage of an area and want to calculate cubic yards you can still use this calculator. Select a rectangle shape and enter your square feet as the length, and enter 1 as the width. Then enter how deep you want the mulch and click the Calculate button. Your answer will appear in cubic yards.

Type in inches and feet of your project and calculate the estimated amount of Limestone Gravel in cubic yards, cubic feet and Tons, that your need for your project. The Density of 2B Limestone : 2,410 lb/yd³ or 1.21 t/yd³ or 0.8 yd³/t. we know that, 1 Cubic Feet = 0.037037 Cubic Yards or 1 Cubic Feet = 1 / 27 Cubic Yards. To convert Cubic Feetto Cubic Yards, divide the cubic feet value by 27 Sum / 27 = 110.22 cf / 27 cf/cy = 4.08 cubic yards. Step 3 - Multiply the result of step 2 (cubic yards of asphalt) by 2.083 (general rule of thumb). The result will be in Tons of asphalt. ex: Cubic Yards * 2.083 tons/cy = 4.08 * 2.083 = 8.50 Tons. Step 4 - … For an object with known density, just divide the number of tons by its density per cubic yard (9 times its density per cubic foot, or 764,555 times density per c... They are not measuring the same things, as tons is a measure of weight (lbs) and cubic yards is a measure of volume.
